Most advice on picking a wholesaler talks about dates as if they were one product. They are not. A carton of semi-dry Deglet Noor can sit in a storeroom for weeks and come out much the same. A carton of Mazafati cannot, and that difference should shape who you buy from.
This site is named after Mazafati, so this guide looks at the wholesaler question through soft dates. If you mostly buy drier varieties, the same checks still apply. They just matter less.
Why Mazafati is harder to buy in bulk
Mazafati comes from Bam, in Kerman province, Iran. In Malaysia it is also sold as Rotab Mazafati Bam or kurma madu. The fruit is dark and very soft, with a lot of moisture in it, and it needs refrigeration. Like every date sold here, it is imported. Malaysia has no commercial date-growing trade, so each kilo has already travelled a long way before it reaches a local wholesaler's cold room. For more on the variety itself, read our page on kurma madu and what sets it apart.
Rotab (or rutab) is the soft, fresh-ripe stage. Tamr is the fully ripe, drier stage. Mazafati is cold-stored along the chain, which is why rotab is on sale all year. Year-round stock is normal for this variety and no reason for suspicion. Our post on fresh versus dried kurma explains the two stages in more detail.
Five questions to ask a wholesaler about soft dates
Search for "dates wholesaler Malaysia" and you will find plenty of suppliers who list Mazafati next to everything else. These questions show which of them actually handle it properly.
- Where is the stock kept between arrival and dispatch? You want to hear "a chiller" or "a cold room", and not a vague "our store".
- How does it travel to you? Ask whether delivery is chilled or by ordinary courier, and how many days it spends on the road. A seller who sends soft dates by standard parcel on a trip of several days is telling you something.
- When did this batch land? Gulf and Middle-East dates are mostly harvested from late summer to autumn, and new-season stock reaches Malaysia some weeks after that. A seller who can name the arrival date is tracking their stock.
- What does the grade mean here? Labels like A, AA or Jumbo are each importer's own size sorting, not an international standard. Ask for the size in plain terms, or for a sample carton. The site's guide to date prices and grading systems in Malaysia explains why grades from two suppliers rarely line up.
- What happens if a carton arrives warm or crushed? Get the answer before you pay, and get it in writing.
Plan the order around your fridge as well as the price
A low per-kilo quote for Mazafati means little if you have nowhere cold to put it. Before you commit to a large supply of dates, work out how much chiller space you have and how fast the stock will sell. Splitting one big order into two or three deliveries costs more in transport. It also means less soft fruit waiting in your fridge.
Semi-dry varieties make the sums easier. Mariami from Iran and Deglet Noor from Tunisia or Algeria are both semi-dry and do not need the same cold handling, so a mixed order lets you take a bigger total volume without overloading the chiller. There is a separate post here on wholesale price levels across a diverse selection of date varieties if you are weighing up that mix.
Order early for the busy months
Demand for dates in Malaysia peaks before and during Ramadan. Hari Raya, wedding hantaran, kenduri and umrah gifts bring smaller rushes through the rest of the year. If you need Mazafati for Ramadan, order weeks ahead and confirm the delivery date as well as the quantity. A wholesaler who is vague about delivery dates two months out will be vaguer in the last week before puasa.
What a good one sounds like
The best wholesaler for soft dates is rarely the cheapest on the first quote. It is the one that can tell you where the cartons sat last night, when the batch landed and how it will reach your door cold. Test them with a small order first. Open a carton on arrival, check the fruit is still soft and cool, and only then talk about volume.
