Unveiling the Price of Medjool Dates

Kurma medjool Palestine

Customers of ours who mainly know Mazafati and other Iranian varieties sometimes ask how kurma medjool pricing compares — the two markets are structured quite differently, and understanding why helps put both price tags in context.

Different cultivation scale, different cost base

Medjool cultivation in the Middle East and increasingly in California is a large-scale, mechanised commercial operation built specifically around this one cultivar's size and export demand. Mazafati and other Iranian varieties, by contrast, come from a broader and more fragmented growing base across regions like Bam and Kerman, with harvesting and sorting that remains more manual. Neither approach is inherently cheaper — the cost structures are simply different, and that shows up in the final price.

Moisture content changes the comparison

Mazafati is a soft, high-moisture date typically sold and consumed close to its natural state, while Medjool — though also a soft variety — is usually dried down slightly further for shelf stability and export. Higher-moisture dates like Mazafati generally have a shorter practical shelf life and tighter cold-chain requirements, which adds cost on the logistics side even when the raw product itself is competitively priced.

Grading systems don't translate directly

Medjool's Jumbo/Extra Fancy/Fancy/Choice grading, based heavily on size and count-per-kilogram, doesn't have a direct equivalent in most Iranian variety markets, where grading leans more on moisture level and appearance uniformity. A "premium grade" Mazafati and a "Jumbo grade" Medjool are being judged on different criteria entirely, so a straight price-per-kilogram comparison between the two tells you less than it might first appear to.

What this means for a buyer choosing between them

If the deciding factor is texture and moisture, Mazafati and Medjool will usually feel more different than the price gap suggests. If the deciding factor is shelf life and ease of storage for gifting or resale, Medjool's slightly drier profile often justifies its price premium on its own terms, separate from any comparison to Iranian varieties.
