How Healthy Is Much Better?

The original idea of a "raw food breakfast" being the best way to start the day skips the actual question a kitchen or cafe has: how many dates go in a bowl, and what do they pair with. That's a portioning question, not a health claim, and it has a plain answer.

A workable serving size

Three to four whole dates, roughly 25-30g, is a standard single serving in a breakfast bowl or snack pairing — chopped if they're going into oats or yogurt, whole if they're served alongside. Larger grades like Medjool run closer to two or three per serving given their size; smaller grades like Safawi or Mariami sit at the higher end of that range.

Chopped versus whole changes the dish, not just the look

Chopped dates distribute sweetness evenly through a dish — oatmeal, a smoothie bowl, a baked good — so less is needed overall. Whole dates served on the side let a diner control how much they eat, which matters for a cafe menu trying to price a dish consistently. Neither method is more correct; they suit different service styles.

Pairing texture, not just flavour

Semi-soft grades pair well with yogurt and oats because they soften further on contact. Firmer, drier grades hold their shape better chopped into a granola mix or baked good where you don't want them dissolving into the batter. A cafe building a menu around dates should stock at least one of each texture rather than one grade for everything. Our wholesaler guide covers sourcing more than one grade at once without overordering.

Sourcing for a menu, not just a snack bowl

Green Diamond supplies across grades, which is what a menu build actually needs rather than a single all-purpose date. Compare texture and price using our prices guide before committing a menu item to one grade.
