The Prized Delight: Exploring Kurma Mabroom in Malaysia

Buah kurma

This site is named after Mazafati, the dark, very soft date from Bam in Kerman province, Iran, that many Malaysians buy as kurma madu. Kurma Mabroom sits at the other end of the shelf. It comes from the Madinah region of Saudi Arabia and is long, slender, reddish-brown, semi-dry and chewy. If you already know Mazafati, the quickest way to understand Mabroom is to put the two side by side. Both are imported, like every date sold in Malaysia, and you can browse Kurma Mabroom Malaysia alongside other varieties.

Two dates from two countries

Mazafati is Iranian. Mabroom is Saudi. The label on the box should say which, along with the variety and the importer. That label is the only thing that tells you what you bought. Colour and shape vary from batch to batch and are not a test for whether a date is genuine.

Grades work the same way for both. A, AA and Jumbo are each importer's own size sorting, so compare net weight and price per kilogram rather than the grade letter.

Moisture changes how you store them

Mazafati holds a lot of moisture and needs the fridge. Importers keep it in cold storage, which is why soft rotab Mazafati is on sale all year. There is nothing suspicious about finding it outside the harvest months.

Mabroom is semi-dry. It is less demanding, but an opened box still keeps better sealed in an airtight container in a cool place. If you buy both at once, the Mazafati goes straight into the fridge and the Mabroom into an airtight tub in a cool cupboard.

The two also sit at different points on the ripeness scale that sellers use. Rutab, or rotab, is the soft fresh-ripe stage. Tamr is the fully ripe, drier stage. Our page on fresh versus dried dates explains the terms with more examples.

Which one for which job

Mazafati is a date for eating at home, straight from the fridge. It is soft and needs the fridge, so it is a poor fit for a warm car or a tray left out through a long kenduri.

Mabroom is the practical pick when the dates leave the house. It suits hantaran trays, umrah door gifts and the plate you set out at an open house during Hari Raya, because a semi-dry date needs no chiller while it sits out. Some families buy both: Mazafati for the fridge, Mabroom for guests.

Ready-made trays often mix several varieties, and you can find beautifully arranged platters of dates that combine a soft date with a semi-dry one. Ask for the net weight of each variety on the tray before you order.

Buying both before the busy weeks

Demand peaks before and during Ramadan, and again for Hari Raya, weddings and umrah season. New-season dates from the Gulf and Iran are mostly harvested from late summer to autumn and reach Malaysia some weeks later. Mazafati is less tied to that calendar because of cold storage. Mabroom stock is worth ordering early.
