A "raw diet" claim on a date product usually just means nobody cooked it — for dates, that's the default, not a special process. The more useful question at the point of purchase is ripeness, and that you can check with your fingers.
The squeeze test
Press gently near the stem end. A good Mazafati gives slightly and feels moist without being wet through the packaging. One that's gone hard and dry has been sitting too long; one that feels sticky-wet right at the surface may be starting to ferment rather than just being naturally soft.
Why it needs no recipe
Mazafati doesn't need soaking, blending or a recipe to be eaten — that's the appeal of the variety. Wipe the surface if it's dusty, remove the pit, and it's ready. Dressing it up with syrup or a sugar coating, which some sellers do to extend shelf appeal, defeats the point.
Buy in smaller batches than you would with a drier variety like Ajwa; Mazafati's higher moisture shortens how long it keeps at room temperature. A supplier who ships fresh stock regularly, such as Kurma Mazafati Seri kembangan, matters more here than it does with drier dates.
Compare against a drier option in the fresh vs dried guide, and check current rates in the Medjool pricing piece before deciding which to stock up on.
