Kurma Mariami next to Mazafati: what actually differs
Since this site sells Mazafati, it's a fair question when a Mariami article shows up here — the two get confused because both come out of Iran and both end up sold under vague "premium dates" listings.
Mazafati is a soft date, almost black, high moisture, usually sold refrigerated or frozen because it spoils faster at room temperature. Mariami is drier and firmer, closer in texture to Piarom, and holds up for weeks unrefrigerated once sealed. If a listing shows a soft, near-black date but calls it Mariami, it's very likely mislabelled Mazafati — the two get mixed up in export paperwork more often than buyers realise.
Where the "medicinal" copy comes from
Neither variety needs a health claim to justify its price. Older wholesale blogs, including some of ours, borrowed the same paragraph about fibre and blood sugar regardless of which date they were actually describing — a sign the copy was never written from testing the specific fruit. The Mariami and Piarom listings now describe grade and origin instead.
Dates as a category have a long trading history across North Africa and the Gulf; Mazafati and Mariami are just two regional styles within that, not competing health products.
