Mazafati is a soft, dark date that lives in the fridge. That matters when someone offers you organic stock in bulk, because the word organic answers one question about the fruit and leaves several others to you. This page looks at organic dates wholesale in Malaysia through one variety, Mazafati, and separates what the label covers from what the cold room and the research have to say.
Start with the date itself
Mazafati comes from Bam, in the Kerman province of Iran. In Malaysia it is also sold as Rotab Mazafati Bam or kurma madu.
It is dark, very soft and high in moisture, and it needs refrigeration. It is cold-stored and sold year-round. Rutab (or rotab) is the soft, fresh-ripe stage of a date, and tamr is the fully ripe, drier stage. Many soft varieties are cold-chained like this, which is why rotab is available year-round.
None of that changes with an organic certificate. An organic Mazafati is still a soft, high-moisture date. The certificate covers how the fruit was produced and handled under organic rules, and it does not change the fact that Mazafati needs refrigeration.
What the organic label actually covers
Malaysia has no commercial date-growing trade, and every date sold here is imported. Whatever farming earned a lot its organic status took place outside the country, so a buyer here judges it through paperwork and labels.
The US National Organic Program is a clear example of how those labels work. Its rules say organic products must be produced using practices that promote ecological balance, maintain and improve soil and water quality, minimise synthetic materials and conserve biodiversity. They must be produced without excluded methods such as genetic engineering or ionizing radiation, under the oversight of a USDA-authorised certifying agent.
Whole dates sit in the simplest corner of those rules. The USDA notes that most raw, unprocessed or minimally processed farm crops can be labeled "100 percent organic". Blends are another matter. A product needs at least 95 percent organic ingredients (salt and water excluded) for the plain "organic" label. A product with at least 70 percent organic ingredients that falls short of 95 may only say "made with organic" followed by up to three ingredients, and it may not carry the USDA seal. So a carton of loose Mazafati and a gift tray of dates mixed with other fillings can sit in different label tiers.
Two more rules are worth knowing before you compare offers. Organic labels must be reviewed and approved by a USDA-accredited certifying agent before they are used. A business that is not certified must not make any organic claim on the principal display panel, which is the part of the package most likely to be seen by customers at the time of purchase.
What research says about organic food and nutrition
A 2009 systematic review in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, led by Dangour at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, compared the reported nutrient content of organic and conventional foods. It searched 50 years of literature and found 162 studies, of which 55 were judged to be of satisfactory quality.
In those satisfactory studies, conventional crops had more nitrogen, while organic crops had more phosphorus and higher titratable acidity. For the other 8 of the 11 crop nutrient categories, no difference was found. The authors concluded that there is no evidence of a difference in nutrient quality between organically and conventionally produced foodstuffs, and that the small differences they did see mostly relate to differences in production methods. The abstract is about foods in general and does not mention dates.
For how much to eat, the NHS counts a 30g portion of dried fruit such as dates as 1 of your 5 A Day. It adds that dried fruit should be eaten at mealtimes, not as a snack between meals, to reduce the impact on teeth. That advice is the same for organic and conventional fruit.

Questions to settle before a bulk order
Ask which certificate covers the lot on offer, and whose name is on it. Check that the label tier on the carton matches what is inside, loose fruit or a mixed tray. Then ask how the stock has been kept on its way to you, since a soft date like Mazafati depends on cold storage whatever the label says.
If you also stock Medjool, our Malay notes on Medjool ripeness stages, grades and storage cover that variety.
Demand for dates peaks before and during Ramadan. Hari Raya, weddings, kenduri and umrah gifts are other busy times, so ask for documents early.
