Homemade Dog Meals Faq’s And Tips

Fresh ingredients used for homemade dog meals

Mistakes that ruin an otherwise good homemade dog meal

Most homemade dog food problems aren't about the recipe — they're one of a handful of repeated mistakes. Fix these and the rest takes care of itself.

Mistake one: seasoning the meat like it's for you

Salt, onion powder, garlic, and stock cubes all end up in cooking almost by habit, and all of them are bad news for a dog — onion and garlic in particular are toxic, not just unnecessary. Cook the protein plain: chicken, turkey, beef, or white fish, nothing added.

Mistake two: no calcium source

Meat and vegetables alone don't cover a dog's calcium needs the way commercial food is formulated to. If homemade meals are the regular diet rather than an occasional swap, add ground eggshell or a vet-recommended calcium supplement. Skip this for months and it shows up as a real deficiency, not a minor gap.

Mistake three: guessing the portion

Homemade food looks smaller than a cup of kibble for the same calories, so it's easy to overfeed. Weigh it for a few weeks until you know what your dog's actual portion looks like.

Mistake four: treating "safe in small amounts" as one list

Onion, garlic, chives, grapes, and raisins are toxic in ANY amount — that's a fixed, non-negotiable list. Other foods, like dates, sit in a different category: not toxic, but not something to overdo either. A pitted date, cut small and given occasionally, is generally fine for a healthy dog; the pit itself is a choking and blockage hazard on its own, and the sugar content means it's a treat, not a staple, especially for overweight or diabetic dogs.

Mistake five: skipping the vegetables

Cooked carrot, green beans, pumpkin, and spinach round out a meal and are easy to add to whatever protein and carb you've already cooked. Raw is harder to digest for a lot of dogs, so cook them the same as everything else.

Mistake six: not planning for storage

Homemade food keeps three to four days refrigerated in a sealed container, or freezes well in single-meal portions for up to two months. Cooking once a week and freezing the rest is what actually makes homemade sustainable long-term.

None of this is complicated — it's a short list of things not to do, more than a long list of things to get right.
