Guadalupe Palm – Brahea Edulis

The name "Brahea edulis" causes confusion for anyone searching for dates, because "edulis" simply means edible in Latin. It refers to the small fruit of the Guadalupe palm, a fan palm native to a single island off the coast of Mexico — and that fruit has almost nothing in common with the dates sold under this site's varieties.

A Brahea edulis fruit is roughly the size of a large olive, with a thin layer of flesh over a proportionally large seed. It was eaten historically by people on Isla Guadalupe, but no breeding program ever developed it into a food crop, so wild trees today still produce the same small, low-flesh fruit their ancestors did.

A Mazafati date is the product of the opposite process. Phoenix dactylifera has been propagated by offshoot for millennia specifically to increase flesh-to-seed ratio, sugar content and shelf life, and Mazafati in particular is prized for its soft, moist texture and dark colour when harvested at the rutab stage. That difference — centuries of selection for a food crop versus an ornamental fan palm never bred for its fruit — is the entire reason the two plants aren't interchangeable, despite both technically producing something called a "date" in casual English.

If you landed here searching for nutrition or buying information on actual dates, the varieties we carry are listed under Dates Fruit, and wholesale pricing guidance is under Dates Wholesaler Malaysia.
